The Royal Scotsman a Belmond Train – Bespoke Tartan & Tweed Story

Journey Through Fabric: The Royal Scotsman’s Bespoke Tartan & Tweed Designs for the Grand Suites

Araminta was commissioned to design a bespoke tweed and tartan for The Royal Scotsman, a Belmond train, for use in their indulgent grand suites. In each thread of The Royal Scotsman’s tartan and tweed lies a beautiful reflection of the untouched Scottish landscape and the illustrious journey that passengers embark upon when they board the Belmond train. Join us as we unveil the story behind the bespoke designs.

Scotland’s Ever-Changing Landscape at the Design’s Core

As the wheels of The Royal Scotsman roll along its legendary routes, travellers are invited to immerse themselves in the splendour of Scotland’s wilderness. From the panoramic windows of the train, a vista unfolds—rolling hills adorned with hues of emerald, vast moors stretching to the horizon, and rugged cliffs meeting the sea. Each element of the design by Araminta is a homage to this journey, revealing a new facet of Scotland’s rugged charm.

Scotland’s ever-changing landscapes are the heartbeat of every Araminta Campbell creation. These natural wonders inspire her in the creation of the unique tweeds and tartans for the Grand Suites. With a deep reverence for Scottish heritage, Araminta creates a world where the majestic outdoors and refined interiors are in a constant, harmonious dialogue, celebrating the timeless beauty of Scotland.

Araminta’s Creative Process

A huge part of her creative process involves collecting objects from nature. “Bird’s nests, from my view, they’re nature’s form of weaving,” Araminta explains. “If you look at them and the craftsmanship involved, the way they layer the materials, they’re just exquisite. There’s just something in the beauty of nature that really captivates me. A walk when you’re looking up and the texture of the leaves. It can be any single moment.”

It’s an organic process for Araminta, with the colours of the landscape in Scotland capable of changing in a second, making any moment a potential inspiration for her next design. Araminta Campbell says, “This design hasn’t just been taken from nowhere, it really captivates so many more core aspects of the incredible journey that is taken on The Royal Scotsman.”

Royal Scotsman’s Story Embellished into the Design

Within the tartan, Araminta has embellished the design with three sets of tram lines, like veins running through the fabric, these lines pay homage to the train’s most legendary journeys—Scotland’s Classic Splendours, Western Scenic Wonders, and Taste of the Highlands. The main check block holds the true essence of The Royal Scotsman tartan. Comprised of 37 threads, it stands as a tribute to every year the train has graced the Highlands with its presence. Each thread is a marker of time, reflecting memories and moments shared amidst the carriages of The Royal Scotsman train.

The complete sett of the tartan, meticulously crafted from 514 threads, mirrors the very miles the train embarks upon during its journeys. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of exploration and adventure that is ingrained into The Royal Scotsman. In the soft green check of the tartan, 10 threads are delicately placed, each representing the 10 carriages that form the train, each thread carrying the dreams and aspirations of its passengers.

“It’s not just the skill of weaving, it’s the skill of craftsmanship and working with colour that I really love to do. Having the threads to work from is an essential part of the process. There’s a wonderful challenge in making sure that it works perfectly.”  The colour palette for Belmond’s tartan and tweed designs are inspired by the untouched Scottish landscape. Emerald hues reflect the rolling hills, while deep, earthy tones capture the vast moors stretching to the horizon. Soft blues and greys evoke the snowy peaks of the mountains meeting the sea, blending seamlessly to tell the story of Scotland’s natural beauty in every thread.

With Araminta’s signature mastery of storytelling through thread, she has crafted a bespoke design that not only exudes luxury but also narrates the enchanting journey awaiting travellers aboard the opulent Belmond Train. Each design element within the designs encapsulates the essence of the adventure and the timeless spirit of Scotland itself.

    Guardians of People's Stories

We are guardians of people’s stories...

We ourselves are stories that weave and take shape through the thread, thanks to the gentle hands of the weavers.

The yarn, the loom, our and your stories, are the tools we have chosen to make what cannot be seen or touched, real and wearable. We give shape to the values in which we believe, we give voice to stories to be shared with those dearest to us, forever.

Not just exquisite works of art to wear, but ambassadors, ‘talking’ objects, timeless storytellers of meanings and values that we want to preserve and pass on.

    Meet Our Artisans

Meet Isabelle, one of our talented handweavers!

Isabelle has long had an interest in textiles, ever since her grandmother taught her to sew.

She discovered weaving when visiting universities before applying to study. Immediately captivated by the woven textile displays at Loughborough University – the home of our George Wood looms – She became fascinated by how these complex woven structures could be created from just a few cones of yarn.

Isabelle enjoys the slow, hands-on process of weaving, appreciating how it demands your full and present focus, and is always excited to share the complexities of handweaving to our visitors.

    Meet Our Artisans

Meet Helen, one of our talented handweavers!

As an advocate for sustainability and ethical production, handweaving appealed to Helen as the embodiment of slow, responsible craft.

She fell in love with the challenging yet meditative weave process during her textile degree at the Glasgow School of Art.

Helen adores that she can name the alpacas in the pieces that she weaves, as this level of provenance imbues the pieces with deeper meaning for both weaver and future owner.

    Made from 100% British Alpaca

We choose 100% undyed British alpaca fiber for our designs because it embodies the values we hold dear: sustainability, durability, and unparalleled luxury. Each fleece is sourced from carefully chosen UK farms where animal welfare is a top priority.

Our close relationships with breeders enable us to trace many of our yarns back to the individual alpacas, ensuring exceptional quality and transparency. The alpaca’s fleeces are left undyed, allowing the natural richness and unique tones of their coats to shine through in every piece.

In the UK, only 5–10% of alpacas produce fleece of the exceptional quality we require. Every fiber is meticulously selected for its fineness, crimp, luster, and colour, ensuring our pieces meet the highest standards of luxury and craftsmanship.

    The Craft of Handweaving

It has taken years for our weavers to attain the skill and knowledge required to create our handwoven items.

Handweaving takes precision and patience, with each warp prepared by hand and meticulously threaded through the shafts of the loom. Once weaving is complete there is a lengthy finishing process involving darning, stitching, washing and brushing – all by hand.

It can take our handweavers anywhere between 2 to 6 weeks to complete one of our Signature pieces.

    Inspired by Scottish Landscapes

Each piece in our Heritage handwoven collection has been inspired by Araminta’s deep love for the natural beauty of the Scottish landscape.

From the golden glow of the beech woodlands surrounding her family home in the Royal Deeside Corridor during autumn, to the ethereal light of the Scottish Highlands at dawn and dusk, the landscape is a constant source of inspiration for Araminta. The shifting interplay of colours, textures, and natural rhythms informs each handwoven piece, translating fleeting moments into timeless design.

Any moment in time could become Araminta’s next creation.

    Meet Our Artisans

Meet Lisa, one of our talented handweavers!

Lisa studied weaving at Heriot Watt University, in the borders of Scotland – an area renowned for its textile production.

She always enjoyed creating things and was recommended to study textiles by her art teacher. When first starting out in her weave degree, she found the slow process of setting up challenging, yet today it’s her favourite part.

She finds peace whilst threading the loom, enjoying and embracing the flow.

    Handwoven in our Edinburgh Atelier

Each piece has been lovingly handwoven and finished in our Edinburgh Atelier by our team of handweavers on vintage George Wood looms.
