Dame Judi Dench visits Araminta Campbell’s Edinburgh atelier

Award winning BBC TV series, Countryfile captures on camera, the esteemed actress and her grandson Sam during a visit to Araminta Campbell’s atelier, a one-of-a-kind hand-weaving workshop on the outskirts of Edinburgh.

Araminta Birse-Stewart, Creative Director leads Dame Judi Dench and Sam through the design process and invites them both to try out their skills on the vintage George Wood looms. We also hear the stories behind Dame Judi’s choice of colour and thread patterns to reflect her love for trees and birds, the 30 threads to represent her 30 years of marriage with her late husband Michael, and 23 threads to mirror the date of Shakespeare’s death.

In this special edition, Dame Judi expresses an affinity with Scotland and talks of her love for the country, “I would say, actually, that my spiritual home is Scotland, simply because I just feel comfortable here.”

In the days and weeks to come, Araminta will weave Dame Judi’s tartan.

Araminta said ‘It is always an honour to be asked to create a tartan but whilst working with Judi it became clear how much this means to her which has made the project all the more special’.

You can watch the Countryfile Dame Judi Dench Special on Sunday 3rd September at 7:00pm on BBC One and on BBC iPlayer.
